The Process
How the NC Energy Saver program works
The program has a clear path. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish, and where we come in as your Registered Contractor.
Apply for the program
Apply online, by phone (866-998-8555), by email, or by mail. You’ll need proof of income and 12 months of utility bills for energy modeling.
Get your free home assessment
The program provides a free energy assessment. A professional evaluates your home, builds an energy model, and creates a custom action plan for your upgrades.
Choose EcoGreen as your contractor
Once you have your action plan, select us as your Registered Contractor. We review the plan with you, explain your rebate options, and provide a detailed quote.
We install it and submit your rebate
Our factory-trained team completes the upgrades to program standards. We submit your rebate application on your behalf. For HEAR, the rebate is applied as an instant discount.
Available Programs
Two programs. One goal: lower what you pay.
North Carolina homeowners can access rebates through two programs. A household can participate in both, but not for the same upgrade type.
Performance-Based
HOMES Program
Homeowners Managing Efficiency Savings
Up to $16,000
per household maximum
Available to all income levels. Rebates are calculated based on projected energy savings from your assessment. The more your home improves, the higher your rebate. A minimum of 20% modeled energy savings is required.
Instant Discount
HEAR Program
Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates
Up to $14,000
per household maximum
For income-qualified households (up to 150% of Area Median Income). The rebate is applied as an instant discount at the time of installation, so you pay less upfront rather than waiting for a check.
What We Install
Every upgrade, done right.
We don’t just qualify under the program. We install every system across all seven trades we offer, with factory-trained technicians who know the equipment they’re putting in.
Cold-Climate Heat Pumps
We install LG LGRED cold-climate heat pumps rated to -13°F. One system handles heating, cooling, and dehumidification year-round. We perform Manual J load calculations for every job.
Insulation & Air Sealing
Most North Carolina homes were built before modern air sealing standards. We close the gaps first, then add the right insulation for your attic, crawl space, or walls. Fastest payback of any home upgrade.
Electrical Panel Upgrades
Older panels can’t safely support modern, efficient equipment. Our electricians upgrade panels to handle today’s loads, with rebates covering a significant portion of the cost for income-qualified households.
Heat Pump Water Heaters
Heat pump water heaters use up to 70% less energy than a traditional tank. For Charlotte and Lake Norman homes replacing older units, this is one of the most cost-effective efficiency upgrades available.
Why EcoGreen
We're your neighbor, not a national contractor.
Registered Contractor, not a middleman
We perform the actual installation. We don't pass your job to subcontractors or use the program to generate leads for someone else.
Based in Cornelius, NC
We've been serving the Charlotte and Lake Norman region for years. When something needs follow-up, you're calling a local team, not a national call center.
Factory-trained across every trade
HVAC, electrical, insulation, plumbing. Our technicians are trained by the manufacturers whose equipment they install, which means proper sizing, proper installation, and no shortcuts.
Duke Energy partner
Our Duke Energy partnership gives us access to the latest efficient technologies and practices, an additional layer of credibility most contractors in the program can't offer.
We handle everything after the assessment
Once you have your action plan, hand it to us. We review it with you, install the upgrades, and submit your rebate paperwork so you don't have to navigate that on your own.
Not all registered contractors are the same.
Some national companies operating in NC use the program to generate leads, then send subcontractors to do the work. You end up with a crew you’ve never heard of, from a company based in another state.
EcoGreen is a whole-home energy contractor rooted in the Charlotte and Lake Norman area. The technician who shows up is part of our team. The work is ours, from start to finish.
Common Questions
What homeowners ask us most
Will this cost me anything?
It depends on your income level. For households at or below 80% of the Area Median Income, eligible upgrades can be fully covered at no out-of-pocket cost under the HEAR program. Households between 80% and 150% AMI qualify for up to 50% coverage. The HOMES program provides performance-based rebates for all income levels based on projected energy savings.
What does the free home energy assessment cover?
A professional energy assessor evaluates your home’s energy performance and identifies where energy is being wasted. They build an energy model using 12 months of your utility bills, which determines your HOMES rebate amount. You receive a custom action plan showing which upgrades qualify, in what priority order. The assessment also includes a health and safety evaluation.
Can I start before the program approves me?
No. Program approval must be in place before any installation begins. This protects you and ensures you receive the full rebate benefit. We won’t schedule your install until your approval is confirmed.
What documents do I need to apply?
Generally, you’ll need proof of income (tax returns or recent pay stubs), proof of residency (a lease agreement or property tax bill), and 12 months of utility bills. If you’re enrolled in a recognized federal assistance program like SNAP, you may automatically qualify for the Tier 1 income bracket without submitting additional income documentation.
Can the same company handle all the upgrades, or do I need separate contractors?
With EcoGreen, yes. We cover HVAC, insulation, electrical, and plumbing under one roof. If your action plan includes a heat pump, insulation, and a panel upgrade, we handle all three rather than coordinating between multiple contractors.
Does this program work for renters?
Yes, renters can participate in the HOMES program with landlord authorization. All housing types are welcome. Contact the program directly at 866-998-8555 to confirm eligibility based on your specific situation.
What areas does EcoGreen serve?
We’re headquartered in Cornelius and serve the greater Charlotte and Lake Norman region, including Huntersville, Mooresville, Davidson, Concord, Denver, Mount Holly, and more than 20 communities across the area.
